Oats, Föckinghauser (Organic)
Avena sativa.
An early maturing, fairly short and lodge resistant white oat with hulls. Used as an animal feed and for hay, or as a winter-kill cover crop in cold climates. Grows well mixed with spring barley and fed in combination for sheep, goats, horses, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits. Bred by Wolfgang Kreimer of Mühlenbachhof, Germany, from the old oat variety, Alfred. We collected it in 2007 when visiting Ulla Grall and her seed company Bio-Saatgut in Germany.

Direct sow in weed-free, well-prepared soil March to April, during a warm dry spell if possible. Optimal plant density is 24 plants per square foot, best planted one seed per inch rows that are 6″ apart. Oats are usually frost tolerant down to 10 °F. Fertility and irrigation needs are very low if you have decent soil.
Harvest and Seed Saving
Harvest for grain or seed saving when seeds are dry and plants are no longer green. Dance, rub, or flail seeds from seedheads. Winnow to clean in front of a fan or steady breeze. Isolation distance is unnecessary for this self-pollinating grain. Save seed without worries.
